This week my employer invited the Poakalani quilting class to showcase “Ulu” design quilts for the kickoff of the “Aloha United Way” annual fundraiser and of course I accepted. I accept these small exhibits for several reasons.
- It showcases the beautiful quilts that are handsewn by our amazing quilters, and they need to be shown and admired for all the time and work it takes to make a quilt. Mahalo Angela, Pat, Susan Takako and Kaelene for taking the time out of your day to demonstrate Hawaiian quilting.
- We are “few” a small niche of quilters who make Hawaiian “style” quilts. We are passing on an amazing quilt tradition that is rooted in Hawaii’s history, tradition and culture.
- In order to perpetuate this Hawaiian quilt tradition, we need to as much as possible exhibit the quilts to the general public and let everyone know that Hawaii also has a textile art.
Mahalo Pat, Takako, Carla, Doris, Kiko, Yoshimi, Nobuko and Keiko for allowing us to share your beautiful quilts with the Kawaiahao Plaza employees. It was well received and admired.
