Quilt Project 51 – State Quilts

Posted on May 29, 2023October 13, 2024 by Cissy

The 2023 was an amazing year for the Poakalani Hawaiian Quilt Ohana.  We returned to the Honolulu Festival and it was a huge success.  The Poakalani & Co Quilt exhibit was stunning considering our classes hadn’t met three years. It was exciting to hang the quilts, many quilted during the Covid Shut-down, and seeing everyone. It was three days of admiration, congratulations and friendship.

One week after the show a miracle happened,

West Virginia - Rhododendron
Colorado - Columbine
Alaska Forget-Me-Not
Alabama - Camellia
Arkansas - Apple Blossom Quilted by Kiko
Delaware - PeachBlossom Quilted by Gordon
Florida - Orange Blossom Quilted by Junko
Idaho - Syringa Quilted by Yuko
Illinois - Violet Quilted by Michiyo
Maryland - Black Eyed Susan Quilted by Susan
Michigan - Apple Blossom Quilted by Laurie
Mississippi Magnolia
Nevada - Sage Brush
New Jersey Violet
Ohio - Carnation Quilted by Takako
Utah - Sego Lily Quilted by Pat
Wisconsin - Wood Violet

we found a venue to hold our weekly classes at the Higashi Hongwanji Temple in Liliha. So we had a successful exhibit, found a new home for our classes and we started planning for Honolulu Festival 2024.

I knew John had an  awesome collection of 45″ x 45″ quilt patterns he designed years ago, which I do have on the commercial market, and each design features the state flower so all I needed was 51 quilters, Yes I know we only have 50 states but John also designed the pattern for Washington DC, and when I presented the idea to the quilters the second miracle happened, everyone in the class volunteered and now all the patterns are spoken for and we’re on our way to having another Show Stopping, Awe-Inspiring Honolulu Festival 2024, so we thought.  Unfortunately, Festival 2024 came and went without our participation due to vendor changes but that hasn’t stopped us from planning and finishing our project.  It’s slow going but I have faith all the states will be completed and hopefully shown in the near future.

Follow along while we work away across the United States and renew our love for our country and the beautiful flowers that each state calls their own.
