Did you know that prior to the 1970’s if you wanted to learn Hawaiian Quilting your first pattern would probably have been a full size quilt. It was not until 1972 that John & Poakalani Serrao became one of the first quilt designers to offer the smaller 22″ x 22″ quilt designs for beginners. It was less overwhelming than the larger quilts and it was the beginning of using the small cushions as artistic wallhangings instead of sofa decorations. Enjoy some of the quilting squares mostly quilted by Poakalani and some from her students. Many of the pictures listed below were taken BDC (Before Ditigal Camera’s) so the pictures are not as vibrant in color but still great to look at. Enjoy!
