Posted on June 11, 2020July 5, 2023 by Cissy

Yes it’s been awhile since I posted. I’ve been having the most difficult time deciding which pattern to share with you. With the COVID19 crisis and now the tragic death of a man at the hands of a rogue police officer the world in which I was raised in is unrecognizable. I don’t have any…

Under The Rose Bush

Posted on May 17, 2020July 5, 2023 by Cissy

I love roses not just for their beautiful blossoms and fragrant scent but for the memory that comes to mind of my mom Poakalani and the Rose Bush story she often told us. Poakalani was raised by her grandmother Caroline Correa, a master quilter during her time, and she would often tell us many stories…

…on a quilt.   Don’t let the large patterns scare you off you also have a choice of making smaller squares which eventually can be joined to make a larger quilt.  This quilt designed by John tells of the many medicinal plants used by the Hawaiians for their ailments.  They too had their doctors of medicine. …

Lots of Poi for the Ohana….

Posted on February 20, 2017July 6, 2023 by Cissy

So I spent the day doing the graphics on another of John’s 45″x 45″ designs. I love doing it. It’s like a puzzle that slowly reveals itself. I start by taking a picture of the 1/8 pattern and uploading it to my computer.  I then use a photo program to color in the pattern and…

One of my favorite quilts depicting my Hawaii.  Palm trees, Canoes and Rainbows.  Quilted by Takako Jenkins. Designed by John Serrao 90″ x 90″.   Before designing a quilt John always asks the quilter, “What is Your Story” and from there he is able to design quilts depicting a magical place in time, a favorite…

The Cupid Quilt,  designed and quilted by Sophie Ventura. Our Colorful Condo

Posted on February 2, 2015July 6, 2023 by Cissy

We live in a very tiny condo in the area they call Lower Nuuanu and/or Liliha . And because of the lack of space most of Poakalani’s cushion quilts were framed and hung on the wall.  As you can see(sorry about the bad pic, took it at night and my cats love to play with them,…

Maile Ilima Wallhanging

Posted on January 10, 2015July 6, 2023 by Cissy

One of our first quilt shows at the Mission Houses Museum showcased several 45″ x 60″ wall hangings.  These quilts were actually made to fit inside of a baby’s crib but  after all the quilters expert handiwork they decided that hanging the quilt rather than placing it in the crib was of course a better…

One of the  Hawaiian Quilt traditions that was strictly followed in our family was that you   “Never Sit On A Quilt”.  You never sat  on a quilt because the quilt was treated with  great respect due to the time invested and the belief that the quilt is the embodiment of the creator’s spirit. To…
