Kimi’s Christmas Wreath 2014 – Beautiful, Amazing and Stunning.
Kimi is one of our Kupulau(Master Certified Hawaiian Quilt Instructor) she teaches in Nagoya, Japan and an expert not only in Hawaiian quilting but also Hawaiian quilt designing.
Sunflower pattern designed using the 1/4 fold instead of the 1/8 fold. This type of fold is used more often when creating patterns for the 45″ x 60″ wall hanging and the 60″ x 90″ twin size bed.
The Poakalani Family wishes all of you a very Merry Christmas and an amazing New Year.
…and to all of our quilters thank you for an unbelievable year. From our March Quilt show at the Honolulu Festival to our daily classes everyone has been only kind and wonderful. Thank you for helping us to perpetuate an amazing tradition. We look forward to next year when we visit Yokohama, Japan in October for the “Na Kupulau O Poakalani” quilt exhibition. Sponsored by 22 of Poakalani’s Certified Instructors.

Yuko I just had to post your photo from Facebook to my website. Bored on Molokai but look at those amazing Hawaiian Quilt Pillows. They are beautiful. You need to open a shop.
Yuko originally from Japan now lives with her husband on Molokai Island. She is a Poakalani Certified Instructor and amazing friend.
Prior to 1972 only large Hawaiian Quilt patterns could be found. When you attended your first quilting class a large queen size pattern and even king size patterns was your first introduction to Hawaiian quilting. In 1972 John and Poakalani decided to design smaller patterns for the beginner quilter. Inspired from the larger quilt patterns from Poakalanis grandmother the smaller quilt patterns became very popular. Today in most quilting classes especially ours everyone starts with a cushion pattern before cutting out the larger quilt. Today, the smaller patterns not only make cushions for our living room but “Art On The Wall”. Designed by John Serrao
Cherry Blossom Quilt by Certified Instructor Kimi Kumagai shows another type of Contemporary Hawaiian quilting technique called reverse applique. While reverse applique is used in traditional Hawaiian quilting to accent flowers and leaves in this quilt it is only reverse applique that is shown. The Beautiful Cherry Blossoms slowly falling under the evening sky. Designed and Quilted by Kimi Kumagai. 90″x 90″
Kimi is one of our favorite quilters. She has been able to convey the art of Hawaiian quilting through many different techniques and incorporate not only Hawaiian themes but themes and traditions from her homeland. She learned to quilt from Poakalani and designing from John Serrao. She is currently teaching in Nagoya, Japan.
